Uruguay - April 2004

April took me to Uruguay to "Meet the parents". While certainly a little nervous, I was quickly put at ease and warmly welcomed into the family.

Phew!

Uruguay was a country full of suprises. There is a wonderful tranquility and a gentle pace of life very different from other parts of Latin America.

Blue skies at Punta Del Este, exclusive resort town for rich and sometimes famous Argentinians and Brazilians.

Montevideo bay on the Rio Plata (River Plate). The english name River Plate is pretty misleading really as plata means silver in spanish which is a far more apt description of this amazing natural wonder.

Lili in a doorway in Colonia. Colonia is considered to be a part of Argentina by many Argentinians who cross the rio plata in ferries every weekend to dominate this beautiful town. I can guraentee though that it is definitely in Uruguay!

Myself and Liliana's Dad browsing around a local Sunday Market in Montevideo.

Taking things easy at a beachside restaurant.

Uruguashas. Well thats how its pronounced. Better check with Liliana to see how wrong I am.

Admiral Graf Spee!!!

To me, Liliana's dad, my dad and I'm sure most educated males over the age of 35 a significant piece of history.

To Liliana, her mother and I'm sure my mother too, a rusty piece of junk.

Parilla!. Meat of course. Lots of it ! Uruguayans, Argentinians and Brazilians all claim to have the best meat in the world. For me they all offer different flavours and are equally tasty.

One thing is for sure though if you haver never eaten meat in the South of South America then you have not eaten meat!

River plate lighthouse in Colonia. Apparently you can see Buenos Aires from here on a clear day. As it takes 20 minutes just to fly over the river, its easy to understand just how big the rio plata really is.

Liliana makes it to the top of the lighthouse at Colonia about 4 hours by bus from Montevideo.

Enjoying mariscos (seafood) at a waterfront restaurant in Punte del Este..

LLuvia!

There are certain unusual things that different people enjoy about travelling. The experience of extreme weather for me is one of the most enjoyable. The rainful in Uruguay did not disappoint me!
