Nevado De Toluca

Mexico, March 2003

Following a conversation with Vincent about the high mountains/ volcanoes of Mexico we organised a little training climb.

Nevado de Toluca's highest summit is about 4600 Meters and I learnt here just how much altitude makes a difference.

I am looking for information about a CEDAM expedition here. If anyone knows anything about this I'd really appreciate an email! mail@alanformstone.com

Traffic jam in the mountains. The volcano in the distance is Popo and is very active at the moment.

Nevado De Toluca from the road. The smoke here is from an accidental forest fire.

"Your such a bloody tourist man!"

Jonothan scrambling through a rough section.

OK, scree running may be frowned upon by environmentalists in Europe, but its a lot of fun and nobody does it in Mexico.

Lunchtime sandwiches courtesy of Vincent, were a delicious combination of crisps, salami and cheese. A winning combination I am sure we will see many more times.

Top of the world

While we were climbing, Popo decided to let off a little steam. Funny to think that such an active volcano is so close to one of the worlds largest cities.

Nicolas showing his displeasure at our frequent stops. (Video 1.9 Mb). BTW his voice is really not like this normally!

Taking one of our very frequent rests

Here I am taking in the scenery.

Maybe scree running should be banned in Mexico. Afterall it seems to be a bit dangerous! (video clip 3.9 Mb)

Nicolas and Jonothan resting and taking in the awsome view.

... and here we all are at the end of an excellent day of hill walking.
