Cozumel Drift Diving - Mexico - Oct 2003

Cozumel is a small island in the Caribbean just less than an hour away by ferry from the Mexican mainland, close to Playa Del Carmen. It is famous for its drift diving in incredibly clear water.

The town of Cozumel itself was somewhat disappointing, being a little too commercial for my taste. The diving however was out of this world!

Taking the endless blue void beyond the wall in stride diving in inner space.

Liliana getting the hang of the trim thing.

The reefs and walls of Cozumel are known for their abundance of color)

Divemaster Jose Luis, looking for Blennies in the sand.

Giant Sponge. These sponges and many others in a wealth of different colors are prolific throughout the reefs of Cozumel.

Cozumel Night Dive. The fast moving tiny creatures in this video clip are some kind of marine worm attracted to light. Wearing a shorty and placing the very powerful HID light on my forearm created a scene of writhing worms that was quite disturbing and not for public consumption! Anyway just to let you know to try this next time you are doing a night dive in Cozumel!

Five divers in a fast boat.

Gentle drift to start the dive, then slip into the current and it's time to start the exhilarating dive flight! Hurtling along the reef at about 3 knots.

Luis writing something in Spanish. I believe it means some like "Very Good"

The walls and reefs of Cozumel have endless swimthroughs and passages. The idea is to drift along and then swim into the labyrinth. Pop out into the current and fly further down the reef to start all over again. This is drift diving at its best.

Luis drying is shirt in the spray!

Video clip of the boat ride and dive. Nice and peaceful

Getting together for the night dive. One of the nicest parts of a night dive is the pre dive anticipation as the sun sets.

Liliana and Luis sleeping it off at the end of an excellent week in the drift diving capital of the world.
