Hurricane Wilma Damage

Puerto Aventuras - October 2005

24 Hours of hurricane winds can certainly do a lot of damage and so I must admit to being somewhat suprised at what we found as Wilma departed Puerto Aventuras.

The pictures on this page show the worst of the damage immediately after the storm. The extent of damage is far less than Hurricane Emily, though sadly all the regenerated greenery has once again lost its leaves.

For more up to date details, especially reagrding hotels etc, I will make regular posts on the News about Puerto Aventuras page.

Entrances to both Catalonia Yucatan and Catalonia Riviera Maya suffered extensive palapa damage, which is good news for the palapa guys!

As Wilma approached, Puerto Aventuras marina filled with boats from all over the Riviera Maya including the Cozumel ferries. I believe 12 boats sank in all from what appeared to be hundreds.

Damage to the Omni hotel is certainly quite impressive, though is pretty much limited to the palapa at the entrance.

The Sunscape had still not opened after Emily, but was very nearly ready. The seaward side suffered little damage, but the land facing side had quite a few windows broken on the higher floors

The Omni beach survived with only the loss of a few palm trees. This is the beach most used by locals and so was quite a relief!

From all the damage of both Emily and Wilma for me this is the saddest. The tiny cenote in the marina at Puerto Aventuras has lost its tree.

The Catalonia hotel had to replace this piece of plant after Emily and it looks like they will need to do it again. Quite incredible to see how the wall collapsed.

When one window goes they all go, especially when they are so exposed to such extreme sustained winds. This penthouse apartment at the Quinta Luna was very well boarded up before the arrival of Wilma.

After Emily the Catalonia did an amazing job to get back on their feet and so it is very sad to see something so recently constructed destroyed so quickly.

Bearing the brunt of the storm, facing directly into the 145 mph winds with no protection, this marina facing condo suffered quite a lot of tile damage and broken windows.
